As I read the memo that had made its way to my mailbox I was astounded. I could not believe how many qualities I had in common with Kimberly, and I couldn’t believe something so tragic had happened to her at such a young age. A personality began to take a shape that fit perfectly with the portrait of her that hangs in the library at Theta. The day I read the memo was the day after Phi Gamma Delta held Cheers for Charity – an event Theta was not qualified to participate in due to university regulations regarding paperwork that was turned in late. The time I spent on the choreography of the routine and the many hours that fifteen of my sisters and I spent at practice felt wasted. One of my sisters who spent four hours cutting the music with me for our routine broke her nose practicing for the event, and our sorority as a whole spent $1,600 between donations for tickets, t-shirts, registration, music, uniforms, and renting a gym to practice each week. I was so angry that everything my sisters and I worked so hard on seemed meaningless since we were unable to perform. I didn’t know Kimberly, but I can guess that if she were in my position she would be happy for the time she spent working as a team with her sisters to raise money for charity, not angry that her team did not perform. My attitude has now changed to look at the situation in a similar light. I would be honored to receive this scholarship because Kimberly and I have so many things in common - the most important one being our goals: to excel academically and help others. It is more important to me now than ever to give unconditionally and to be constantly grateful for the ability to help others because she is unable.
